The BTECH UV-PRO is the closest thing that we have found to a do-it-all handheld radio. It is affordable enough for first-time users but IP67-rated and rugged enough for hard use.

It's also very easy to operate, while retaining advanced features like Bluetooth, GPS, and APRS capabilities, app programability, and a built-in terminal node controller for advanced digital modes. The UV-PRO can also be programmed for GMRS bands and is Part 90 certified for business or public safety licenses.

If your comms plan is to stash an unopened box of radios under your bed until disaster strikes, this is a little overkill, but if you want something you can actually use and learn on, the UV-PRO is hard to beat.

A common struggle for civilian radios is protecting the PTT and volume knob from getting bumped around.
