This is the Garmin Foretrex 601, and it is an incredibly capable tiny GPS device. It, uh, is able to receive signals from three different GPS networks, so the Lono Galileo, and then the American GPS one, which makes it more resilient. Not only is it more accurate and gets a fixed faster and works better in challenging environments, it's also a little bit better at, not being spoofed. Uh, so that's a really important thing. It's got a bunch of other sensors in here too. It's got a digital compass, which is quite accurate, and it's got a barometric altimeter, which is so-so, but it's definitely a useful feature if that's something that you need. And I'm not gonna talk about this device a whole lot for a very specific reason. If you know why you need this device, you don't need me to tell you about it.
And if you don't know why you need this device specifically, you might wanna do a little more research because something that has maps or something that has a simpler interface might be more useful for you because this is a very specific device for very specific tasks. It's really great at giving you your location in a bunch of different coordinates, showing you multiple types of coordinates at the same time, and logging things and doing some navigation. But without map data, this device assumes that you have a map with you and you are using this device in conjunction with maps that you are using this device in conjunction with some kind of pre-planning that you have done. Now the good news is the pre-planning is pretty easy. You can use the Garmin website or Garmin Basecamp on a computer to build waypoints and roots and save those as a GPX file and then plug USB cable in, copy 'em straight across.
So there's a ton of things that this can do, and it has a bunch of really useful features. Like this is the only one that right outta the box has a really solid backlight that is night vision capable. The night vision sitting on the backlight is really, really good. The screen is really simple. It is black and white, or technically, I guess it's four colors of gray, but it's a really simple screen that doesn't, uh, doesn't necessarily show you a whole lot compared to some of these other devices. Um, but one of the reasons that I would prefer to use this in certain circumstances over this one is how much bigger and brighter, more readable this screen is. So it has features in here that Garmin won't tell you how to use, like the jump master, software, which is, uh, for skydiving and, high level, you know, just, just really high level parachuting operations.
They assume that you're gonna have somebody teach you how to do that and, and they don't tell you how this works, but all that stuff is in here. So if you have specific needs, this thing is really, really solid. It runs on two AAA batteries and so you're able to get like 48 hours of constant GPS tracking out of this thing that way. But, uh, if you use it more sparingly, like all these devices you can get way, way more time. And AAA batteries spare AAA batteries are super easy to carry. So this thing lasts for a very long time. It's almost impossible to kill, and it does a few things that nothing else on the table does. If you need it, this is the one to get. And if you're not sure, there are some other things that you should look at. So if you have questions about this device, I recommend that you talk to our customer support team [email protected] and they will be able to give you some answers. But a lot of the stuff in here, uh, somebody else has to teach you how to use.
