The Army's fundamental purpose is to win wars through land force dominance regardless of location or climate. This manual provides general principles and technical guidance for field maintenance, operation, and repair of equipment under extreme cold weather conditions from freezing down to temperatures below -65 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) or -54 degrees Celsius (°C). Leaders must be familiar with ATP 3-90.96—the Army's manual for cold weather operations. It provides the doctrinal foundation to understand the Arctic region's operational environment and how to conduct military operations in it. The fundamentals of the manual are applicable to all cold weather environments. Military operations in extreme cold conditions occur at the limit of what is safe and what is dangerous.
