This publication is updated with the command and control warfighting function, whereas the previous version was written when doctrine still referred to the mission command warfighting function. Command and control is the exercise of authority and direction by a properly designated commander over assigned and attached forces in the accomplishment of a mission (refer to JP 1). The Army defines mission command as the Army's approach to command and control (also known as C2) that empowers subordinate decision making and decentralized execution appropriate to the situation (ADP 6-0). To assist in commanding forces and controlling operations, commanders establish their command and control system, which is the arrangement of people, processes, networks, and command posts that enable commanders to conduct operations (ADP 60).
