Mortars are suppressive indirect fire weapons. They can be employed to neutralize, suppress, or destroy area or point targets, screen large areas with smoke, and provide illumination or coordinated highexplosive/illumination. The mortar platoon's mission is to provide close and immediate indirect fire support to all maneuver units on the battlefield. HISTORY OF MORTARS 1-1. Since the 15th century when they first appeared, mortars have contributed greatly to the maneuver force. The first mortars were large and heavy, not becoming portable until around the time of the American Civil War; where mortars influenced operations and the outcomes of battles. Later improvements to mortars allowed for one Soldier to carry and operate the weapon.
