MCTP 3-40F Distribution and Transportation Operations 1-1 CHAPTER 1 FUNDAMENTALS The Marine Corps organizes tactical-level logistics into six functions of combat service support (CSS). One of those functions is transportation; however, the description of the transportation function in tactical-level logistics lacks the detail necessary to provide a complete picture of how to staff, equip, deploy, and sustain a force. At the joint level, distribution is one of the seven core functions of logistics and includes transportation as part of its description. Distribution and transportation are therefore interrelated, and together these two concepts help complete the picture on how to staff, equip, deploy, and sustain the operational forces.
