Logistics is defined as, "Planning and executing the movement and support of forces" (DoD Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms, hereafter referred to as DoD Dictionary). Logistics, as one of the Marine Corps' seven warfighting functions, directly supports Fleet Marine Forces (FMF) and Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF) expeditionary operations. The Marine Corps has historically provided initial self-contained and self-sustained expeditionary forces designed to independently accomplish missions. These forces are task-organized to meet a range of missions and have the logistics capabilities to both initiate an operation and to sustain and reconstitute the forces for follow-on missions.
