The Commander's Handbook for Religious Ministry Support is a guide for all Marine commanders, especially those with chaplains assigned to their units. Navy chaplains have been directly assigned to Marine units since World War I, and have proudly and humbly provided pastoral care to Marines from Belleau Wood to Baghdad, and are honored to be the primary pastoral care providers to the Nation's premiere warriors and their families. Federal law protects the right of all Servicemembers to practice their faith within the context of military life, culture, and operations. The facilitation of religion within Marine units is the responsibility of the Marine commander, not the chaplain. Therefore, this handbook is offered as a guide and template for the facilitation of the free exercise of religion within Marine units.
