This manual supersedes FM 31-15, 18 September 194/, including C 1, 16 April 1942; and C 2, 29 Seotember 1942. Chapter 1 GENERAL 1. Basic Principles. a. Military operations conducted under conditions of snow and extreme cold follow the same basic principles as do operations under other conditions. The differences lie in the tactical and logistical limitations imposed by the adverse climatic conditions and in the special equipment, training, and procedures necessary to overcome these limitations. Failure to equip and train troops properly for operations in extreme cold before beginning operations leads directly to failure of the operations themselves. b. The principles and doctrine described in this manual are applicable to operations conducted under conditions of snow and extreme cold in any type of, terrain.
