CHAPTER 2 SOUND WAVES AND THEIR PROPAGATION IN THE ATMOSPHERE Section I. GENERAL 6. General A disturbance produced by a local distortion of a continuous elastic medium is propagated in all directions from its source at a rate which depends on the physical properties of the me- dium and not on any characteristic of the source. The propagated wave may or may not be audible; that is, it may or may not be a sound wave, depending on the characteristics of the source and not on the properties of the medium. Waves of this type may be propagated through elastic solids, liquids, or gases. Artil- lery sound ranging depends on the measure- ment of the times of arrival of sound waves propagated through the atmosphere under whatever conditions happen to exist at the time. 7. Generation of Sound Waves a. Impulse Wave.
