FM 4-40 COAST ARTILLERY FIELD MANUAL SEACOAST ARTILLERY SERVICE OF THE PIECE 12-INCH MORTAR, RAILWAY ARTILLERY (The matter contained herein supersedes TR 435-230, February 14, 1927.) SECTION I GENERAL 1. ScoPE.-a. This manual prescribes the service of the piece for the 12-inch mortar, railway artillery. It is applicable to the M1890 or M1890MI mortar, mounted on an M1918 carriage, and an M1918MI or MII car. The duties of the members of the gun section in the service of the piece are contained in section III and in the drill table in section X. b. The service of the piece is based on the use of an overhead loading device and a gravity loading tray (pars. 24 and 25). If this equipment is not available, loading is accomplished as described in paragraph 26. c. The service of the piece described herein is intended as a guide for the battery commander.
