Section I. GENERAL V 1-1. Purpose This test manual presents concepts and techniques for training and employing forces in a riverine environment. It outlines interim doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures for training an infantry division for employ- ment in stability operations where inland waterways are the primary lines of communi- cations (LOG). The manual is written primarily to serve the immediate requirements imposed by opera- tions in Vietnam and secondarily to provide further information on the development of con- cepts and doctrine concerning riverine warfare conducted in a more general riverine environ- ment. c. The significant operational concept of riv- erine warfare concerns the sustained employ- ment of forces in a riverine environment, one element of which is the force operating on the waterways.
