1. Purpose and Scope a. This manual is designed to aid the individual soldier and small unit leader in fighting, living, and moving under the varying terrain and climatic conditions of the sparsely populated and rela- tively undeveloped cold areas of the world. As the majority of the sparsely populated and relatively undeveloped cold areas of the world are found in the Northern Latitudes, portions of this manual are specifically directed to those particular areas. b. The material contained herein emphasizes that cold, with its attendant problems, affects military operations but does not prevent them. The proper use of authorized equipment and field expedients will, to a major degree, overcome any problems en- countered as a result of cold.
