This manual is limited in scope to discussion of doctrine and associated tactics, techniques, and procedures for employment of military forces in desert environments. The doctrine is definitive primarily in two ways: First, in military considerations which apply only to the desert; and second, in considerations which apply to many types of environments but which require modification in their application in the desert. The scope generally includes all deserts, but the primary focus is on the regions south and east of the Mediterranean Sea. North Africa and the Near and Middle East are used by way of historical example because in these areas below and beyond the Mediterranean occurred the only major campaign in modern times involving the US Army in a desert environ- ment.
