To understand FM 3-90-1, the reader must understand the doctrinal fundamentals contained in Army Doctrine Publications (ADP) 3-0 and 3-90 and Army Doctrine Reference Publications (ADRP) 3-0 and 390. The reader should understand how the activities described in ADPs 3-07 and 3-28 and ADRP 3-07 carry over and impact the conduct of offensive and defensive primary tasks and vice versa. The reader should understand the operations (plan, prepare, execute, and assess) process and how that process relates to the Army's military decisionmaking process and troop-leading procedures described in ADP 5-0 and ADRP 5-0. The reader should also understand the intelligence preparation of the battlefield (IPB) process found in ADRP 2-0 and the targeting process described in ADRP 3-09.
