2-3 ARMORED FORCE FIELD MANUAL * 2. PURPOSE.-The purpose of this manual is to outline training methods, observation and reconnaissance methods, and the types of tactical action in which an armored reconnaissance platoon and company may have to engage in order to carry out its function of obtaining information. * 3. MIssIONS.--a. The principal mission of all reconnaissance agencies is to obtain information required by higher authority and get it to the interested party in time to be useful. While it is highly desirable to obtain information without being detected, time is the important factor. The reconnaissance platoon and company must therefore be prepared at all times to act both intelligently and aggressively. b. The reconnaissance platoon and company may expect, in addition to the mission of obtaining information, to be given counterreconnaissance missions. c.
