This manual discusses the organization, responsibilities, and concept of operation for combat service support of the Army in the field. It incor- porates the approved doctrine contained in the review of "The Adminis- trative Support, Theater Army, 1965-1970," the conceptual tenets of "Major Command Echelons," and programs contained in the "Logistic Master Plan." 2. Due to new or revised doctrine and the publication of related field manuals the following changes have been made: a. The subjects—rear area protection, base development, communica- tions, and civil affairs—have been abbreviated. b. Chapter 2, "Operational Environment," has been added to emphasize and consolidate this important consideration, and incorporate tactical nuclear doctrine. c. Chapter 12, "Processing and Shipping Retrograde Materiel," has been added to document the doctrine developed in Vietnam. d.
