This chapter contains doctrine which applies gen- erally to all aviation units discussed in the manual, subject to adaptation to the level and ca- pabilities of each unit. 2-2. Command Relationships a. The commander of a supporting Army avia- tion (AAVN) unit becomes a subordinate com- mander and an advisor to the supported US Army land force commander. Although the aviator in command of an aircraft is the authority on the technical operation of that aircraft, the Army commander to whose command the AAVN is as- signed or attached exercises the same command function over the aviator, organization, and equip- ment as he does over his other Army units (AR 95-1). b. The command relationship established be- tween the ground unit and the supporting aviation unit depends upon the mission or degree of control directed by the higher headquarters.
