The Fort Leavenworth Field Unit of the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) supports the Combined Arms Command by conducting research on human performance issues in command and control. In January 1991, the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) requested the Field Unit's assistance in surveying key personnel in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm (ODS). Working closely with CALL personnel, the Field Unit developed and distributed questionnaires to virtually all commands involved in ODS. Roughly 2,500 questionnaires were completed and returned to the Field Unit over the next 3 months. Field Unit personnel developed a data base system for storing and analyzing the information and entered the material from the questionnaires into the data base.
