Historically, in every conflict up through World War II, in which the United States was involved, approximately 20 percent of hospital admissions were the result of combat injuries. The other 80 percent were the result of disease and nonbattle injury. In some areas the incidence of disease was so severe that entire divisions became combat ineffective. Note. A disease and nonbattle injury casualty is defined as a Soldier who is lost to an organization by reason of disease or injury and who is not a battle casualty. 1-2. The problem was so severe that the United States War Department ordered the establishment of antimalaria details within every company, battery, or similar sized unit.
