ATP 3-27.3, Ground-based Midcourse Defense Operations (GMD) is a proponent-level publication. It is the principal publication for describing GMD operations and the Army's GMD mission in defense of the United States homeland, friends, and allies from ballistic missile attack. All aspects of this ATP are consistent with the FM 3- 27, Army Global Missile Defense Operations. This ATP also establishes the doctrinal framework for GMD Operations in the joint community. The GMD program provides defense against ballistic missile threats. However, it is imperative to understand that other types of threats exist that are not ballistic in nature. It consists of specific defensive measures designed to destroy, nullify, or reduce the effectiveness of enemy ballistic missile attacks.
