Effective DIVARTY operations and fire support require leadership, knowledge, and situational understanding. Situational understanding is the product of applying analysis and judgement to relevant information to determine the relationship among the operational and mission variables to facilitate decisionmaking (ADP 5-0). DIVARTY staff members must possess an in depth understanding of the functions associated with the planning, employment, targeting, and execution techniques necessary to ensure fires are available and delivered when and where they are needed. ATP 3-09.90 builds on the collective knowledge and experience gained through recent operations, and numerous exercises. Fires assist Army forces in seizing, retaining and exploiting the initiative, defeating adaptive threats, and succeeding in a wide range of contingencies.
