Today's airspace environment is increasingly complex. Technological advances in air defense systems, cruise missiles, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), loitering munitions, and long-range fires shape that complexity. The air domain's vertical component, and the speed and freedom with which forces maneuver within it, create unique challenges for commanders seeking to exercise control in the air domain. In addition, wide-ranging variables such as aircraft capabilities, airspace characteristics, airspace use, and various control procedures create additional layers of complexity. As such, the objective of airspace control is to enable military operations with the most effective, efficient, and safe use of airspace to achieve joint force commanders (JFC) objectives and priorities. Airspace control is extremely dynamic and situational.
