In 1651, the Enlightenment thinker Thomas Hobbes published Leviathan, his masterwork of political theory. His plan prescribed a gigantic and brutally overpowered civil government, with unlimited authority and unfettered control over the lives of its fearful subjects. This was his ultimate solution to all societal ills, but the underlying idea was nothing new.
Every historical tyrant has sought to expand their power and control under a central authority, and the pursuit of freedom and liberty has always necessitated resistance to tyranny. This tension is as old as mankind, and stronger today than ever.
Slaying Leviathan describes this ancient battle between tyranny and liberty by documenting all the ideas swirling around this conflict. Christianity defines the inalienable rights of individuals and the limits of civil government. Justice requires a civil government to uphold the law, but also requires that government to be restrained by individuals when it departs from the law.
Our book, The Path of Liberty, focuses on the laws and compacts of nations, whereas this book delves into the broader ideas and theories that contributed to their development. They are a very complementary set of books for understanding the history and application of these concepts.
