The InReach Mini 3 Plus is a significant upgrade over the Mini 2 we’ve carried for a few years now. The biggest improvement is the inclusion of a speaker and microphone, so you can send and receive voice messages directly from the device. The larger display and new touchscreen also mean a more usable keyboard for faster text input, making this device a far more usable standalone satellite communicator. There’s also a new basic basemap included on the device, which isn’t particularly detailed but does provide city and highway navigation data beneath the usual breadcrumbs, pins, routes, and standard Garmin trackback capabilities.

The Mini 3 Plus also pairs with the Garmin messenger app on your phone, as well as watches and other devices in the larger Garmin ecosystem. This allows you to coordinate location data sharing across groups easily and send voice and image data from anywhere on the planet. If you need voice, images, and long-form text over satellite, the InReach Mini 3 Plus delivers these capabilities in a small and relatively affordable package, both as an app-supported device and as a truly standalone device. However, if you don’t need all the bells and whistles of the Mini 3 Plus, the Mini 2 is still a solid choice and is more budget-friendly.
