The BTECH UV-PRO is the closest thing that we have found to a do-it-all handheld radio. It is affordable enough for first-time users but IP67-rated and rugged enough for hard use. It charges over USB-C, so you don’t need proprietary cables. It is simple enough to operate with the front keypad and easily programmable with a basic smartphone app, but it also has some pretty advanced messaging tools and a built-in terminal node controller for advanced digital modes.

It’s a pretty standard 5-watt UHF/VHF analog FM radio with dual watch, frequency scanning, and tone scanning capability, but it can also listen to aviation bands and NOAA weather alerts. The GPS and compass features let you do standard APRS beaconing and messaging and see the location of other APRS users. It has Bluetooth so that you can run it directly with your existing earbuds, but we are also including an adapter for the Kenwood 2-pin plug so you can use downleads and PTTs for integration with proper headsets.

All in all, the UV-PRO is a great handheld for amateur radio use. It can be programmed for GMRS bands and is even Part 90 certified for business or public safety licenses. If your comms plan is to stash an unopened box of radios under your bed until disaster strikes, this is a little overkill, but if you want something you can actually use and learn on, the UV-PRO is hard to beat.
